Ackee Series, watercolor, gouache, and ink on paper, 3" x 4", 2016-2017

Preceding a return trip to Jamaica, I created a series of  six ackee paintings. These painting were an admission to the idealization of a fruit which makes up one half of the country’s national dish. The idealization was born from the idea that in person interaction and consumption would facilitate a fulfillment of Jamaican identity. Six paintings were made following the trip and were meant to contrast the previous works. In some instances the new works show further idolizing while others attempt to document through realism.
